Anatomy of a WurliTzer Theatre Pipe Organ

SURF - Exploded View

The pneumatic, lower right, exhausts slowly through the magnet and pulls the spring pallet away from the triangular slot and allows air to blow, through the slot on the front of the box, onto the edge of the metal sheet.

The slow action causes the sound to build and die away slowly. A Sand Block has a similar action but includes a valve to make the sound start and stop quickly. The Surf and the Bird Whistle are the only actions in the instrument without a Primary Pneumatic and valve.
