Anatomy of a WurliTzer Theatre Pipe Organ

The stages in stripping a magnet to replace the coils.

The left magnet is as it comes out of the chest.

Scraping the shellac off the top of the magnet poles and link plate should allow the plate to be removed. It may be neccessary to ease the sides of the plate apart to free it up. Some versions of the plate have a slot in the center and the sides are crimped in to lock it in place. Carefully gripping the plate with pliers and wriggling it should release it, sooner or later. Do not apply any force to the Bakelite base or you will end up with more pieces than you can use.

When the top plate has been removed the coils should be able to be removed from the poles. Cleaning the remaining shellac from the top of the poles will help. Rust on the poles will not help. If the coils are damaged during removal it does not matter because you would only be removing them if they are beyond use anyway. Again do try not to damage the base.
