THE DEEP CUTTING TO THE SOUTH OF MILLHOLE

The cutting starts just to the south of Millhole Farm, where the old and new lines separated.

I thought there were some trees in the way here. Little did I know of what was to come.

Here the cutting goes through rock, but this reverts to soil further downhill
The cutting acts as a fallen tree magnet. As well as having the Newtyle Burn running alongside the track, all the falling timber falls inwards,
downwards and makes forward progress somewhat challenging.
You get an idea of just how deep the cutting is. The base is a lot of dirt washed down plus leafmould and fallen trees. Very damp.
