The final drop down into ApplecrossIn the 1950's Ealing Studios made a Comedy "Laxdale Hall", based on the struggle to get this mountain road upgraded to modern standards. It was originally a 'drove' road, taking cattle to the markets. Often as far as Stirling. Hence the name 'Pass of the Cattle'. Until the road was re-built the only way out of Applecross was by Ferry too and from Kyle of Lochalsh which was often impossible during bad weather.
At Applecross, you can spend a while visiting the area. Applecross house was used as the 'Big' house, in the film and there is a small chapel just beyond. The road continues beyond the village to Toscaig. Tiny fishing hamlets where you can imagine the difficulties before the road was built. There are nice views across the Inner Sound to Skye with the island of Raasay and Duncaan's recognised peak well defined.
