RE-ISSUE OF THE LTOT HERITAGE SERIES ON CD

DOUBLE TOUCH
- From the Odeon, Manchester with Charles Smitton & Trevor Willetts
CD (LTOT - HS3)

Special Price £4. 99

(From the Original LP Sleeve) "The Wurlitzer pipe-organ in the Odeon (ex Paramount) Manchester was shipped to this country from America on the 14th July, 1930. Job No. 2120, the instrument was known as a Publix No.1 model and was designed by the famous American organist, Jesse Crawford, who later played it in person when he visited Manchester in the thirties. The only one of it's kind to be installed outside America, it was at the time of the recording the largest theatre pipe organ remaining in any European Theatre. The organ was opened on October 6th, 1930 with Charles Smart at the console, since when it has been played and broadcast by many famous organists. Apart from a series of 78 r.p.m. records made by Henry Croudson in it's early years, this is the first solo record to be issued of this wonderful instrument. The organ was cleaned in 1947 when the Solo Vox Humana rank was replaced by an English Horn, and as it exists to-day there are 20 ranks (sets) of pipes installed in two huge chambers (rooms) on either side of the theatre proscenium arch. The organ possesses the usual traps and percussions and has an unenclosed Master Xylophone and upright piano, which is featured on this recording. In 1969 Robin Richmond christened the Odeon, Manchester organ "The Queen" Wurlitzer and we are sure you will agree that she sounds her regal best under the hands of two capable musicians who present for your enjoyment a selection of well-loved melodies". The organ was removed upon the closure of the Odeon and moved to the Free Trade Hall, Manchester. A further move resulted in the organ being installed at it's present location in Stockport Town Hall.

Tracks Include: Charles Smitton - Estrelita. (Signature Tune), Chu Chin Chow, Love's Last Word is Spoken. (with Enid Powell, Soprano), Girls Were Made to Love and Kiss, Don't Be Cross. Details of the Organ from the original LP Sleeve: "The 4 Manual, 14 unit Wulitzer organ in the Gaumont, Manchester was installed in 1935 and was made famous throughout the country through the broadcasts of the late Stanley Tudor who was organist for many years. This the instrument has become known as the "Tudor Rose" of Manchester. In January, 1974 the theatre closed following a memorable farewell organ concert when well over 500 people were turned away after every seat in the house was filled. The organ was purchased by the LTOT and in due course will be re-installed in a new home. Meanwhile at the time of writing (September, 1974) the instrument is in store."

The organ was in fact installed in the Granada Studios Tour complex in Manchester, but unfortunately was removed some years later. It is again in store awaiting a new venue. Any offers of storage or a venue will be appreciated.

IN PARTY MOOD (ACD241) CD £ 8.99
Kevin Morgan at the organ of The Town Hall, Ossett, Yorkshire

A first class musician, Kevin is in ever increasing demand for organ concerts all over the UK. As a teacher he taught piano and organ at a local school for twelve years and is currently Organist and Head of Keyboard studies at Stonyhurst College.
In 1961 the Theatre Organ Club purchased a delightful 2-manual 5-rank Compton from the Rialto cinema, Bebington. A new home was found in the following year at the Town Hall, Ossett, West Yorkshire, and the financially independent Northern Theatre Organ Trust was formed to rebuild, maintain and promote it. It was realised, however, that the organ would be too small for the hall, and so the Trust began the work, of seeking out several extra ranks and a larger console, and over the following six years designed and built the beautiful 3- manual 13-rank instrument that we now hear, and which was opened in January 1970. In the hall's superb accoustics, the organ has a most distinctive sound. It has been broadcast many times over the years, and this is the eighteenth commercial recording of it.
Tracks Include: Good Old Vienna, You Belong To Me, Porcupine Rag, Butterflies In The Rain, The Policeman's Holiday, Don't Laugh At Me, The Blue Danube.
