Chaz Bender, Theatre Pipe Organist
and member of the Central Florida Theatre Organ Society.

We talked with Chaz a bit and this is what he had to say about himself and the life he has led in the Land of the King:

I was born and raised in New York City in the midst of the theatre pipe organs at the Roxy, NY Paramount and Radio City. My mother studied theatre organ with Jesse Crawford at Steinway Hall in Manhattan in 1948 and 1949. She was of course my teacher.

I played a huge Allen Analog Organ in school, installed after tearing out an Aeolian Skinner 3/28 that they said could not be fixed. The kids in the neighborhood ran up and down the streets blowing little flue pipes (YIKES).

The first pipe organ I played was in a show in 1955 on a Hall and Sons 2/9 all under expression. For the next forty years we raised a family and only played a couple Hammonds we had.

Glad to be back at theatre pipes again. Now just need practice.

Chaz Bender gets to play the J. Tyson Forker Memorial 4/32 Mighty WurliTzer Theatre Pipe Organ installed at Grace Baptist Church in Sarasota, Florida on a regular basis. During one of his sessions, he recorded the songs below and sent them to Walnut Hill for you to enjoy. We quote him below:

I used a Marantz PMD670 flash card recorder and recorded to a 1GB flash card at 250KBPS with a 48KHz compression spread. I am not super happy with the sound. Marantz said I should record at 128KBPS or PCM at 48KHz. The problem with PCM is that a 1 GB card only gives me 1 hour and 28 minutes recording time.

About The Recordings

Below, you will find some information about most the songs featured here, along with some lyrics if you know these tunes and would like to sing along as you listen.

I'm In The Mood For Love

Written By Dorothy Fields and Jimmy McHugh, 1935

I'm in the mood for love
Simply because you're near me
Funny, but when you're near me
I'm in the mood for love.

A great love song not written for a movie.

We'll Meet Again!

Sung By Vera Lynn to the troops going overseas to fight in the Second World War in England, 1939.

We'll meet again, don't know where, don't know when,
But I know we'll meet again some sunny day.
Keep smiling through just like you always do,
Till the blue skies drive the dark clouds far away.

So will you please say hello to the folks that I know, tell them I won't be long.
They'll be happy to know that as you saw me go, I was singing this song.
We'll meet again, don't know where, don't know when,
But I know we'll meet again some sunny day.

Exactly Like You

Composers: Dorothy Fields and Jimmy McHugh, 1930

I know why I waited
Know why I've been blue
I've been praying for someone, baby,
Exactly like you.

Why should we spend money,
on a show or two
While no one does those love scenes, baby.
Exactly like you.

Melody Of Love

Composer: H. Engelmann
Publisher: Theo Presser
Place of publication: Philadelphia
Date of publication: 1903

In my heart there is a mel-o-dy
That forever sings of thee.
Each fond strain is soft and sweet and low,
Just because I love thee so.

(In Waltz time.)

A Pretty Girl Is Just Like A Melody

Composer: Irving Berlin

A pretty girl is like a melody
That haunts you nighty and day.
Just like the strain
Of a haunting refrain,
She’ll start upon a marathon
And run around your brain...

Whispering and Pennies From Heaven

Starring Bing Crosby, 1936

The Touch of Your Lips

Composers: Ray Noble and Al Bowlly, 1936

The touch of your lips upon my brow,
Yiur lips that are cool and sweet,
Such tenderness lies in their soft caress,z
My heart forgets to beat.

The tough of your hands upon my head,
The love in your eyes a shrine,
And now, at last, the moment devine,
The touch of your lips on mine.
