This month's featured organ is the 3/11 Mighty Kilgen Theatre Pipe Organ. installed at the Palace Theatre in Canton, Ohio. It is the fourty-second instrument to be featured at Walnut Hill thus far, being very dear to fellow Walnut Hill Wall of Fame member Dan Rowland.

The tone of this fine Theatre Pipe Organ is powerful and beautiful. There is a sumptuos reverberation in the acoustics of the palacial hall where it resides. Seen in the shot above is the console of this rarest of the Kilgens resting on a raised platform at center stage.

This Theatre Pipe Organ has three manuals and eleven ranks. There are plenty of tonal flavours to keep any organist happy whether doing a concert or accompanying a silent movie. The instrument is comfortable to sit at and play, and the sound is powerful and symphonic in the atmospheric auditorium where it lives.

In this shot, we are looking straight on at the keydesk of this magnificent instrument. Note the blue stops that control the strings. Yellow stops are the tuned and untuned percussions. The red stops control the reeds and the white stops are for the flues.

This is the left end of the horseshoe containing the Pedal and Accompaniment stops.

Moving on around the horseshoe, we come to the center bolster containing more of the Accompaniment stops and the Great stops, along with the Second Touches, Generals and Tremulants on the back rail.

At the right end of the horseshoe are found the remainder of the Great stops and the Solo stops.

Under the keydesk, we see the swell shoes and the toe studs along with the two piano pedals.

A Closer Look At The theatre


The 3/11 Mighty Kilgen Theatre Pipe Organ installed at the Palace Theatre sounds like a symphony orchestra with a classical flare. It is perfectly suited to the original atmospheric movie house where it lives. As we shall see in the pictures to follow, this is a beautiful theatre.

This is the entry lobby of the Palce theatre. Note the beautiful tilework on the floor and the fluted trim around the doors.

This is the mezzanine of the theatre just after one passes through the lobby on the way into the auditorium. The consession stand is visable in the right side of the picture. The stairs lead to the balcony above the main floor level seating.

Here, we see the Mighty Kilgen poised to play on the stage of the auditorium, and a grand sight she is indeed backed by scarlet curtains with gold tassel trim. This shot was taken from the balcony.
