The Buffalo Area Chapter of the American Theatre Organ Society was officially founded in 1984 coinciding with the completed restoration of the Wurlitzer organ at Shea's Buffalo. Many of the founding members were originally part of the 'Friends of the Buffalo Theatre' group that successfully saved the Shea's Theatre from the wrecking ball.
The club currently sponsors and promotes organ related events for both its members and the general public. In 2001 the club worked with the Buffalo Public School system to bring many children to Shea's for a special theatre organ program presented by organist Len Rawle. The club was also responsible for organizing and presenting the organ concert series at Shea's until 2004.
Chapter meetings are now regularly held at the Riviera Theatre, North Tonawanda, where aspiring artists are given the chance to play the Riviera's own 1926 original Mighty Wurlitzer. The Riviera Theatre & Organ Preservation Society features theatre organ concerts from April to December and similar events are also held at other organ-equipped venues such at the Lockport Senior Center. Buffalo Area Chapter members are also directly involved with these venues in the preservation and promotion of theatre organs. On occasion, the Chapter will meet at member's homes where either a large electronic theatre organ or pipe organ is installed.
Membership in the Chapter is open to anyone. You do not need to know how to play the organ, or how to maintain one. If you enjoy the theatre organ and its music, join us in our effort to promote and preserve it for generations to come. Members are encouraged to take the opportunity to become full members of the American Theatre Organ Society. This widens the scope of involvement in organ preservation and promotion through worldwide association with other Chapters, allowing participation in national events as well as the opportunity to see organ installations in other parts of the world. A bi-monthly magazine is provided to full ATOS members, filled with news and information relating to theatre organ in all its aspects.
