Technical Matters |
We're going to start a feature on a monthly basis, space allowing, to present facts about the Theatre Organ in general and our instruments in particular. We will describe various features, how things work, how they are fixed when they don't work, and sometimes descriptions of the instruments, either their parts, or even the whole thing. This month we start with the chamber analysis of Wurlitzer Opus 1407, which happens to be our organ. It's a Style 260 SP, which is something like a model number. "260" was the basic model, and SP was a "special" designation, meaning that some features had been added to, or occasionally removed, from the basic equipment. In this case, it was a second Vox Humana in an "echo chamber" above the proscenium arch of the stage. A chamber analysis is a listing of the pipe ranks and tuned percussions, and sometimes traps and other sound effects. |
The Style 260 was the most popular model among larger Wurlitzers, with 62 being produced, and was the prototype for the almost identical Balaban 3 Style, produced for the Balaban and Katz Theatres. It had many coveted ranks, including a Brass Saxophone, Brass Trumpet, Orchestral Oboe and Quintadena. For this reason, most of these models which survived demolition have been broken up to sell the ranks. We have one of the very few intact Style 260 Wurlitzers in the world. |
