STIRLING & ALLOA RAILWAY VISIT
September 2008

The closest that you get to the Wallace Memorial Tower by train. A view
not possible by passengers for more than 40 years

The most picturesque views on the eight minute run to Alloa

The SPT 170 Unit at the buffer stops at the eastern end of Alloa station. Freight continued to use the line after closure but as
seen in this view the tracks have been completely relaid and with the success of the new passenger service in only a short
time plans are already at hand to extend the passenger service through to Dunfermline and to either continue on the 'circle
line to Edinburgh or connect with the present cxircle services

On Saturdays & Sundays the service turns around with only 10 minutes waiting time but on week days it can be 30 minutes
or so. Plans are also in hand for possibly increasing the service to two trains and hour.

The present deadend, which as mentioned will be extended to Dunfermline. In this case the need for two platforms
platforms with double track will be required, unless the platform line is signalled for two-way working and a
crossover included just ahead of this point. Points already exist at the southern end coming off the singleline

Looking towards Stirling with the signal already cleared for the departure

The driver waits for the trainman's signal to depart and I have a minute and a half to get on board or wait another hour

Back at Stirling and after a walk up town for some refreshments and then wait for the Aberdeen train.
A train arrives from Glasgow for Dundee

While 170420 departs 170421 arrives from Inverness for Glasgow Queen Street

170421 waiting for the off

A walk to the north end of the station to wile away the minutes before the Aberdeen train arrives. From this view the stop
blocks from the old down platform bay, missing track into the down sidings and overgrown platform indicates that this
isn't in the steam days

The two Class 158 sets in the down bay platforms

170416 arrives from Perth on an Edinburgh service

A National Express HST 43239 from Inverness waiting to depart for Edinburgh and London

=================================

That was my last photo of the day and the Glasgow-Aberdeen train arrived on time. It was quite an pleasant 'unplanned' day out.
