CRC CHEMICAL NOTES

By John Pearle

I have just realised that it has been nearly a year (longer, by the time you read this) since I had a good rummage round in the chemicals cupboard. There is a new issue of the price list. Yes they have gone up, well a few of them have. Not only are some of them more expensive for us to buy, but the cost of carriage has risen, too, so this will eventually find it's way to more chemicals as new supplies arrive. They still represent excellent value.

Please note that ammonium thiosulphate crystals, item code 4, is now sold out. It's replacement is the 60% solution, code 5. This keeps better that the solid.

That reminds me... remember that most solutions are described on a weight for weight (w/w) basis rather than the weight per volume (w/v) that we usually use.  This can be a bit confusing for us weighers and mixers who are not used to weighing liquids. I know we do sometimes, but it is unusual.

To use this as an example, ammonium thiosulphate 60% solution contains 60 grams of ammonium thiosulphate for each 100 grams of solution. In this case, 100 ml of solution contains 79 grams of thiosulphate. So it is (roughly) an 80% w/v solution.
The same applies to other solutions, so remember when you are using a solution instead of the solid form called for by your recipe, that the solution you are using might be stronger than it appears from the label.

To simplify things somewhat, the there is a Club Chemicals note which gives this information for many of the chemicals stocked. If Bill has enough space in this issue of the News, perhaps he can fit it in. Otherwise, just send me a stamped addressed envelope, it doesn't need to be a big one, and I will send you one. The address is on the price list.

PLEASE NOTE...
---------------

Some chemicals cannot be posted, and may be sent by a different carrier. Packing costs 40p per order. Carriage will be charged at cost.
Prices are per 10g or 10 ml, order what you want in multiples of 10g and the price will be in proportion. Odd quantities will normally be rounded up tothe nearest 10g or 10 ml.

The packing in which these chemicals are sent may not be suitable for long term storage. If you do not have a suitable container of your own, please say on your order that you need a storage container.

Orders will normally include safety data which may be in the form of a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). These contain first aid and other useful information. They may not be of UK origin and are not intended to fulfil any legal requirements. Don't throw them away since we will not normally send repeats with future orders.

Many chemicals go under a variety of names, the ones used here are those that have appeared in previous lists, if you have any queries or are unsure of the identity of a chemical, please ask.  The bill will normally be included with the order.
