OPEN MEETING REPORT

The meeting took place at the B .R. Staff Club Didcot on Sunday 31st of ‘May. Once the AGM was over the slide presentation started at 3pm. 30 members attended.

Dr. Neill from Barnsley started things off with two A V presentations The first was a Fisheye attachment view of a stroll around York City which produced some unusual sequenses from the viewpoint of of a Cyclops.

The second sequence was a candid camera view of what people get up to during their shopping trips to the Supermarket As Dr Neill remarked, you cant just point a camera at people in such a public place and so the camera was hidden discretely inside his coat The films used were 3M 400 and 1000 ASA and this proved very adequate, but did show how the flourecent lighting~ varied in colour balance in every supermarket. But quality was good. Dr Neill can be relied upon to come up with some thing different and amusing and certainly came up trumps once again, and proves why he so rightly deserves to win his FRPS think we owe him our thanks for traveling the long journey just to put on his work. No mean fete for a retired gentleman and who misses most of the other presentations to make the return journey home.

The next part of the programme was the talk and question time by our guest from Konica, John Davies who was welcomed by Sec. Ron Croad. Numerous questions were asked by Bill Reid both from himself and Eric Clark who posted them in. Other members also .put their questions to him and all were answered without hesitation making a most lively discussion Due to lack of space in this issue, a full report on the questions will appear in October. But may I take this opportunity to ask those members who asked questions to please let the Editor have a written report on these so that they can be added to those rnentioned and make up a complete article for next time. But in the meantime out thanks to John Davies for attending our meeting and doing such a good job. We hope that he and his wife enjoyed themselves as much as we did.

The interval followed with the usual fair served by the Reid Family, with the comment being passed that Mandy did a better job of doing the food than her dad did.

with his processing0 During the interval members were able to look around the sales stalls set up by Kevin Craske of TFM and Frank Beumont from Dunstable where film’ chemicals, ‘slide’ frames1etc were on sale.. Ron Croad had the Konica film, on show and sale and Bill Reid’s UNO Electronic Heating unit was set up and working for display.

The second part of the programme started with an A V “Wonders Of Nature’~ from Area 15 Leader Bert Sanders. This was a pleasant 15-20 minutes of the glories of nature in colourful slides which were a. mixture of Agfa, Sakurachrome and~R50” with ‘equally pleasant electronic musical background Staking us through, the four seasons looking at flowers and the changing country scene. A really fine effort.

Another A.V. followed by a very recent member to Area 20, Glen’ Wilgrove of Didcot. the first sequence “Lakeland Visit!! took us through the Lake District with excellent ‘mountain scenes, plants and flowers accompanied by appropriate music.

The second presentation was “Waltz of the flowers” No need to tell you what the music was, But Glen had caught some excellent flower scenes such as tulips using the camera well in selecting the flowers to stand out in their surroundings. A number of feet were noted, tapping to the music in the dim light and members were obviously enjoying this part of Glen’s work. An excellent first visit to our meeting arid we hope t .the last.

Next followed a period of seeing the few slides some members had brought for discussion. Bill Reid showed his latest results from weighing & mixing. Some improvement on last results, but still puzzled as to why there was need to extend first development to 10 minutes to achieve reasonable results, but at least no colour cast problems to worry about. A number, of suggestions were given to try improvements next ‘time.

Eric Weatherill followed with some slides on Konica & Fuji film all shot at 200 asa on 100 asa film It may be that Eric is an ex airman in that he produces some great aircraft shots from the Air Shows, just that little bit better than the usual. Perhaps this was because he had found an air show which doesnt put the public on the wrong side of the runway where the sun is always behind the displays causing the usual silhouette in the sky effect The detail of the undersi4e of the jets, from Meteor to Concord was quite excellent, and as Eric says, what ‘better plane to photograph than the Harrier which stands still in the sky waiting for you to take your shot. Very fine processing too.

The final presentation was a welcome return of Bill Crumplin with his 3-D slides. Although we had seen most of these before, Bill has added a new refreshing programme by having boosted his projector lamps from 250 to 1000 watts with a brightness and depth, which is quite outstanding. Not he didn’t need a water cooled screen as suggest~ last year, all the difference was seen on the metalic screen . Though Bill says that on first conversion of the lamps the heat filter melted and he had to use: a double filter to add even more interest Bob Grimes had made a taped commentary with music which helped’ the programme along. A real ‘in depth experience. Thanks Bill.

The day ended around 7 30 with everyone saying what a good day they had and some thow’ht it the best meeting’ so far So, once again, thanks to everyone who came from so far away to either put on a show or just enjoy the presentations. Please give thought to next years meeting and let us know if you can put on some slides, show some prints or some kind of demonstration We shall be working to mike things even better for you next time.
