TOWER BRIDGE

 Page Two

Once the subject, across or along the bridge, has been chosen, the camera must be got ready for shooting so that the picture can be taken immediately a quiet patch occurs. If I decide to take photographs from the middle on one of the bascule spans, I always guard against camera shake. These two huge moving parts of the bridge vibrate only slightly as a small car rides over them, but when a bus or lorry “crosses the line,” then the movement is really considerable. The best plan is to use a faster shutter speed than normal.

To stand as a fitting companion to the Tower of London, Tower Bridge was given a feudal appearance by its designers. In fact, the bridge was completed only 63 years ago. It came in for a little criticism at the time it was built, and some people were quick to point out the doubtful artistic value of building an important London Bridge in ancient style. But you may guess that my feelings towards Tower Bridge are — to say the least — quite affectionate. I shall continue to visit it with my camera, for I reckon always to find plenty of good material there for my lens—both on the bridge and from the bridge.
