AREA NEWS

FILM AND PROCESSING PRICES Pete Guy (Area 20).
A short time ago I had the privilege of writing a short article for another camera club called the Half Frame Group. This is a nationwide club that specialises in half frame format, i.e. 72 frames from a 36x35mm cassette, and it is hoped that the article would attract some new members to the CRC. One of the items I concentrated on was the cost of processing ourown films as well as processing prints from slides, using home brewed chemicals, and the benifits of being a member of the CRC. I think you will agree that it is quite cost saving all round. I took an average process run of one film in a 300ml developing tank, but the cost of the chemical mix was a half litre for each bath and using it for eight films, therefore.

Commercial Process

8 x 36 films at £2.50 = £20

CRC Chemical

7 baths of ½ litre chemical = £6.06

For Cibachrome printing, 5 litres of each chemical, but of course Cibas own bleach must be used.

Bought Chemical

5 Lt of developer ------ £9.00 appx.
5 Lt of bleach -------- £15.00 appx.
5 Lt of fixer -----------£8.95 5

----------------------- £32.95

CRC Chemical

5 Lt developer made - £2.80
5 Lt bleach bought -- £15.00
Lt fixer made --------- £5.00
--------------------- £22.80

As the printing chemicals are on a use and throw away basis, I think the savings are very good all round, and worth being a member of the now famous CRC.

ANY VOLUNTEERS?
A lady in distress wrote to 3M. After her father`s death she had discovered an undeveloped reel of 16mm Ferraniacolour standard 8 cine film of her wedding. 3M were unable to process the film on her behalf. They replied by sending her the official formula and recommended that she contact the "Well reputed" Colour Reversal Club.

Our Chairman, Bert Sanders, has a tank and a film splitter which he is willing to lend to anyone who is prepared to have a go at processing this. Mrs. Weaver is willing to pay well beacuse of the film`s content. However, 3M have advised her that because the film is some 20 years old the image stability could not be relied upon.

Ron Croad has the copy of the 3M formula as well as a copy of the Club`s own formula. He also has all the required chemicals. Write to Bert or Ron if you can help.

HINTS AND TIPS Patrick Marchment (Area 22).

I recently attended a talk given by the chief Photographer of the Dorset Police to Swanage Camera Club. The part that interested members most was that concerning Night Photography We were shown giant colour prints, Larger than 20 x 16, taken from the tops of buildings at Bournemouth and Poole. "It is just about possible" he said "to over-expose" and the exposures he used wese 40 MINUTES (yes that`s right) at F8 or F8 or F11 on 200 ASA film. What was surprising was that images were recorded on film that he could not see himself. He assured us that the outline of Poole Power Station was not visible to the naked eye, but it was on the print alright.
