FRED HARVEY

Fred Harvey, the founder of CRC50 Club, forerunner of the Colour Reversal Club, died peacefully at a nursing home in Felixstow, at the age of 83, on Sunday 29th. December.

In 1970 Fred had a regular column in News Weekly on processing Ferrania 25ASA Reversal film. The film then became 50ASA and called, CR50. The film lacked consistent high quality and Kit information was`t very comprehensive and there was a need for general advice.

By 1972 it was suggested that a Club should be formed and Fed became the obvious choice. Readers of a number of magazines were invited to apply for membership and in just weeks Fred had over 1000 applicants. He split the UK into 26 Areas and got a member from each Area to act as Area Leader to circularise members and arrange meetings.

Fred began a friendly relationship with 3M who owned Ferrania and they published the CR50 News at their own expense. Fred continued to edit CR50 News until handing over to Oliver Barron who continued the same close contact with 3M.

Fred`s career was with the Metropolitan Water Board until a serious lung condition forced early retirement. For a time he and his wife ran a craft shop in Sussex. later they moved to Selsey and shortly after the loss of his wife he started the CRC50 Club.

My thanks to George Sparkes for this information. George, who was one of those first Area Leaders continues:- "In 1977 & 78 I joined Fred, his son, Roger and a few other members of Areas 19, 22, & 23 on two most enjoyable residential photo courses at Maryland College, Woburn. A few years later he was involved in a head-on motor accident which seriously damaged his hip. I visited him once or twice a year until he moved to be near his family. Six months ago he moved into a nursing home in Felixstow. I hear that he had a hearty lunch on the day that he died. Fred leaves three married sons".

The Executive Committee of the C.R.C. extend their condolances and best wishes to Fred`s family.
