EDITORIAL

One of the 'down' sides of being a C.R.C. 'official' is when there is little or no response to the work they do for members and the Club.

I have long accepted the criticism when things go a bit wrong, but it would be nice if some of you would be as keen to respond on the things that go right!. Area 3 Co-ordinator joins me in this concern.

His members know how much time he spends on finding fresh material to include in his very COLOURFUL local newsletters. However, he too comments on the lack of response from his members, apart from those who express the things they don't like.

It isn't easy finding fresh material every quarter and as explained in my articles regarding the use of the computer to compose presentable text, graphics and now, photographs, is quite time consuming. WE both have full time jobs to hold down as well as trying to have some social time as well. My time spent at the computer is also extended by the new contacts gained via the Internet. I have tried hard to show that the talk about computers and the Digital Image isn't meant to be a threat to 'traditional' photography, but a tool that can be used to considerable advantage, not only making work on the newsletter easier and more enjoyable, but that CRC members can either ignore the new media or add it to their enjoyment of 'messing-about' with their photograph collection, in addition to continued work in their darkrooms.

While members continue with traditional photography WE can use the computer to, not only present a worthy newsletter but also print their photographs/slides in the pages as a proper example of what they are producing and encouraging others to take up the hobby. You only have to look at an Internet Web Site to see how "presentation" is important.

Using Hypertext (HTML) pages both pictures and sound (yes, and even videos) are used to express people's ideas. Obviously sound can't be used in the newsletter, but certainly high quality text and graphics can be added to articles to great advantage, without the computer and Digital Imaging being a threat to Colour reversal photography or processing.

While it is right that you should/must air your views when things are wrong, why not also use that same energy to not only say when things are right, but try to send in Articles using full advantage of the media now available to use, to make the CRCN even better and represent our hobby of producing high quality Colour Reversal Film as good as when projected onto a screen in your living rooms.

If you don't have use of a computer and/or print scanner I am sure others can help you to transfer your prints & slides to files that either Roy or myself can load into our respective Desktop Publishing programmes and get your work onto the newsletter pages.

Are you "up to" the challenge? We look forward to hearing from you. Copies of simply your favourite slides or a short series along with an article or short comments would be most welcome. Send either by 'slow mail' or over the Internet, the choice is YOURS.
