Ken's Radio Transcription Recordings
August 2001 I was lucky to have received copes of Ken's Radio Transcriptions. Most are played on the Wurlitzer ES but there is a good mixture of Hammond sounds too. As far as we can make out, these recordings were made on 15" type LP's. possibly by or for the American Forces Network, during or just after the war. Everyone who has listened to these tapes agrees that Ken plays in a much free-er style than we are accustomed to hearing and the varying styles and moods proves what a perfectionist Ken was and a far better organist than given credit. Boring and using the bass pedals as 'rests' Never!
Ever since hearing Ken's "When Irish Eyes are Smiling" LP I had hoped that he would have played some Scottish songs. It was a nice surprise to hear him play two in this collection. Annie Laurie and Auld Lang Syne and what a nice job he has made too, although I don't know what Traditionalist would have made of him 'swinging' Auld Lang Syne. I like it. Here, he simply sits down and 'plays' the organ. These recordings more than deserve to be produced as a brilliant CD collection.

Eric's Comments: "Kurt has the original radio transcription records also. They are a larger diameter than ordinary LP's but run at 33.33 RPM like a regular LP. But, interestingly enough, the recording groove starts at the center of the record and spirals out. Also, they are red instead of black, and they are transparent. There are other selections of other types of music on these radio transcriptions besides just Ken's music, but we couldn't listen to them because he has no way of playing them".
Anyone out there have a means to playing and transferring these recordings to audio tape or CD!
