Saenger Theatre, Hattiesburg

Page Sponsored by:

Originally installed in the Strand Theatre, Hattiesburg in 1927 and later moved to the Saenger Theatre. This picture dates to 1932 so the organ must have been pretty much new to the Saenger when this photo was taken. The Webmaster - Jerrell Kautz visited the organ in 1996, found the theatre closed, in the clutches of the City Government at the time, with no power, heat, lights in the theatre. The organ was finally found using flashlights and the help of a cordial lady from city hall. The console has been replaced and looked good, but the overall condition of the organ can't be too wonderful given the environment it is in. Hopefully this has changed since that time. Any new information/photos would be appreciated.

It is known the organ was moved to a private residence in Meridian at one time and then back to the theatre in the 1970's.

Photo from "The History of RADIO in Mississippi", written by and copywritten by Bob McRaney, Sr., who is seated at the organ in this photo.
