Everyone who was a member of the C.R.C.
prior to .1982 is bound to remember Pete Roberts. Apart from being the
Leader of Area 9, he was a prolific article writer for the CRC.
and various photographic magazines. His temperature-controlled water
bath, his pH meter, his chemical balance, his electronic battery-powered
thermometer, and his photo-enlarger exposure meter is only a few of his
devices. And what is more they were all well designed, cheap and simple
to make, and worked beautifully.
Although he has gone to Canada he is
still a Member of the C.R.C. and in Area Nine. He has recently got
himself a bungalow, termed, as Pete says, “ Own” although most of it
is owned by the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce. When vetting
Pete’s property the Sheriff found that there was a Pete Roberts on his
list of “Baddies”. A few affidavits later, our Pete managed to prove
that he was not even in the country at the time.
Here is an anecdote from Pete
regarding Canadian “BARFEN”
“Soon after arriving in Ottawa I got involved with a local Club and as
they have some keen colour processers amongst the members I volunteered
to give my lecture “Starting in Reverse”. All went perfectly normal
‘until’ part way through the second segment when I compared shots of
colour patches. Every so often a group at the front would fold up
laughing.
Now I try to be amusing, but this
section was serious. Puzzled and not a little perturbed, I struggled on
to the end. After the wind-up comments, etc, I talked to one member of
the ‘Hyena’ group and got the explanation. It was whenever I
mentioned BARFEN viz, They couldn’t help thinking that I was saying
“Barfing”. Out here, to “BARF”is to’throw up’. On
reflection, I can well understand their getting a fit of the giggles -
Especially as some of the
results with early batch of E3/F4 Barfen were enough to make you
“Barf” anyway!!
