By Bill Reid (Area 3+)

Sakurachrome 100 asa E4 Film - Zorki SLR Camera

The island of Barra is the last inhabited Island in the long arm of Islands which form the Outer Hebridies, from Lewis, Harris, North Uist, Benbecula and South Uist, to Barra Head. You can get there by plane from Prestwick, or by Ferry from Oban (Twice Weekly). The airport runway is a Cockleshell beach. The island featured in the Ealing Comedy ‘Whisky Galore’ (Tight Little Island, in the States). A sequal, 'Rocket's Galore' was also made. The island gets it’s name from St. Barr who’s statue is in the western corner of the island. One main road (A888) circles the island with a couple of short roads to the west. There is an easy scramble to the summit of the highest mountain, Ben Heaval. It is extremely wild in the winter but Mediterranian blue in the Summer and a carpet of wild flowers in the spring.
