TONY'S CP ELECTRONIC METER, REPORT

Tony Chuter comments on his experience on using the C. P. electronic pH meter as mentioned on page 8. Tony, as many of you will know, builds his own pH meters and admits having doubts about this gadget, but having got a loan of the one Rita Pearle received from C P, he is pleased to show otherwise in these comments:-

“Do you feel that you will never be the complete photographer unless you own a pH meter? There are those amongst us who swear. By them, on the other handsome eschew their use and wouldn’t dream of using one, and there are many who would like to

have one, but the price puts it out of each.. Whatever your persuasion, the fact remains that you can never be absolutely sure that you are working to the correct pH if you don’t use one.

Fortunately, the main barrier to none-ownership - price - has, largely been removed with the introduction of the minature rneter described in the foregoing report but Rita Pearle. I use a standard meter myself and I must confess to a degree of scepticism when I, was tolled that there was now a minature digital read-out meter on. the market, robust, accurate and small enough to fit (with a clip to hold it) into a jacket pocket’

Soon after I had heard about It. I obtained one and the tests that I carried out at~ home, confirmed to me, that this - for us - is a viable alternative to the accepted laboratory-type meter that’s in general use and very much cheaper. The cost is no more, than a roll (thirty meters) of film, and this could even be less if we take advantage of the bulk-purchase discount if you support us!

Apart from my own trials I was able to show the meter to the Committee when we met at Worcester  for our annual pre-AGM meeting. Our technical Officer, Brian Savage, is in charge of the Pathology Department. at the Ronkswood Hospital there, and through his good offices we are able to meet at this central venue. Brian produced three laboratory-grade liquids of pH4-pH7 and pH9 together with distilled water to wash the probe between, changes. In each case the meter registered within the 0.l degree of accuracy that the makers claim for it

Several of the Committee members already own a pH meter and those that do not, said that they were certainly interested In obtaining one. What better recommendation do you need?

(With thanks to Oliver Barron who first brought this pH meter to our notice and to Margary Meadows and Rita and Major Pearle for following it through ) As mentioned YOUR Area Leader will have an advert giving full details of’ the meter which you can request for your interest and perhaps take advantage of the offer.                                                                                                                                                                        Ed.
