THE ABERDEEN TO INVERURIE CANAL (Remains)

As at APRIL 2022 with older photos to add to interest.

Bill Reid

The canal ran from Waterloo Basin at the harour to Port Elphinstone (Inverurie). Built in 1805 until 1849 when the Great North Of Scotland purchased it and built their
Aberdeen to Elgin mainline. The railway was built upon the majority of the canal bed but diverting in a few places due to the lay of the land or that curves would have
been too tight. Only a few of these divergences remain as most have been ploughed over ad built upon. There are traces to be found if you do a bit of a search.
