THE SCOTTISH MUSIC HALL & VARIETY THEATRE SOCIETY DEDICATION TO

GEORGE CORMAC & IRENE SHARP

The Glasgow Royal Concert Hall Green Room Restaurant
Sunday 12th of April 2009

Irene Sharp

On Sunday 12th of April The Scottish Music Hall & Variety Theatre Society honored Irene Sharp who with her late husband Gerorge entertained as the singing duo Cormac & Sharp. As well as playing throughout Scotland they sang on Radio & TV and were resident artists on cruise ships, taking Scotands songs all around the World. Irene who is from Glasgow had/has a wonderfully powerful voice yet sweet and with perfect pitch and whether she was signing Scots songs or from operetta was always charming to hear. George, who was from Aberdeen had a soft voice, which could also be powerful when required and their close harmony produced a sound that was all their own.

I had the pleasure of operating the sound lighting for them at the Tivoli Theatre in Aberdeen back in the 60's and it was always a joy to listen to them and to work with the lime Operators to find the right combination of stage lighting and dual colour spotlights to show up the magnificent gowns and dresses Irene wore to suite the mood of the music. I learned from Irene at the Dedication that her father made most of her dresses. He was a railwayman but also had a keen eye and use of needle & thread that produced these wonderful gowns & dresses from suggestions by Irene.

Throughout the afternoon Irene received numerous compliments and little stories from speakers Ann Fields, Johnny Beattie and Ronnie Coburn that turned out to be very interesting and entertaining. These are people who have known and worked with Irene & George for over 50 years and told of funny moments at theatres all over Scotland and the U.K.

Irene bravely gave her own story in what was a very emotional moment, what with so many memories of Home, family and life in the entertaiment world along with George.  Nerves almost took over but with support from her daughter Irene faught back and bravely completed her story of their stage and recording work together. George had also been a Japanese prisoner of war.
